A first trip to the Karakoram is less about one big decision and more about six small ones made in the right order. This is the whole picture in one place — season, fitness, permits, cost, altitude and gear — with a link to the full detail on each, so you can plan with confidence rather than guesswork.
Start with the season
The month decides the trip more than the route does. The reliable window for the high treks and every expedition is roughly late June to mid-September; blossom tours run in spring, and the south is a winter destination. Pick the window first, then the route that fits it.
Be honest about fitness
You need to be comfortable with long days on rough ground for up to two weeks, carrying a light daypack. Fitness buys you margin, but it is ascent rate — not VO2 max — that most often decides whether a trek finishes. Build an endurance base over a few months and train your descents as hard as your climbs.
Sort the paperwork early
Most nationalities need a Pakistan visa — an online Tourist Visa, which we support with an invitation letter once your trip is confirmed. Trekking and climbing permits, park fees and liaison officers are ours to arrange, but the big-peak permits carry real lead times, which is why we ask for months, not weeks.
Understand what it costs
We quote one all-in figure per group rather than a headline price, because the honest number depends on group size, the objective, dates and hotel standard. Smaller private groups often cost less per head than people expect. Budget separately for international flights, your visa, insurance, personal gear and tips.
Respect the altitude
Our base camp itineraries build in rest days and conservative ascent profiles that look like wasted time on paper and are the reason trips finish. The only reliable treatment for altitude illness is descent, and on our trips that call is never negotiable.
Pack for the mountain, and for the porters
Bring proper four-season kit, broken-in boots and a dry-bag system, and split it into a trekking duffel and a base-camp duffel before you fly. Your porter allowance is 15 kg — every kilo you save is a kilo someone else does not carry over the Baltoro for two weeks.
Then choose the route
With the season, your fitness and your budget clear, the route almost picks itself. Treks range from the classic Baltoro to shorter valley walks; expeditions run from 6,000m peaks to the eight-thousanders. If you are weighing the two most-asked-about treks, we have a straight comparison.
Putting it together
Tell us the window you can travel, roughly how fit you are and how many of you there are, and we will send back a single costed itinerary from someone who has actually run the route — usually within 24 hours. That is the whole plan: pick the season, be honest about fitness, let us handle the paperwork, and we build the rest around you.
